It may have been the Golden Globes this weekend in Los Angeles, but the British travel industry celebrated at its very own star-studded awards programme last night.

It may have been the Golden Globes this weekend in Los Angeles, but the British travel industry celebrated at its very own star-studded awards programme last night.

Around 1,000 travel agents and operators put on their posh frocks (and a few kilts, too) to head to the glitzy Grosvenor House Hotel in London for travel trade magazine Travel Weekly’s annual Globe Awards.

So, who were the big winners in cruise, as voted by travel agents? Fred. Olsen walked away with the award for best “three star plus” cruise line, while Royal Caribbean took best “four star plus” line. Silversea won the luxury cruise line gong, and Hurtigruten best specialist line.

Finally, on the non-agent side of things, P&O Cruises took home the consumer award for best cruise line — voted for by readers of Associated Newspapers (this includes the Daily Mail, Travel Mail and the Metro).

Beyond the announcement of these accolades, the highlight of the night was definitely the entertainment.

The gala kicked off in style with hilarious “Britain’s Got Talent” finalist, Stavros Flatley — a father and son duo that had the crowd in stitches with their blend of river dance and traditional Greek moves. And rumours that Alan Carr was presenting for the night were confirmed when the star appeared on stage with TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp.

But the guest appearances didn’t stop there. In between dinner and a whole host of awards (more than 40 — not just cruise, remember!), two of 2009’s “X Factor” stars performed for guests. Bubbly Stacey Solomon and former teacher Danyl Johnson sang two songs each, including Stacey’s version of Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever?” and Danyl’s cover of the Beatles’ classic, “With a Little Help from My Friends.”
