Severe winter weather is affecting travel from the US midwest to the southeast, and airlines are issuing waivers left and right as travel is hampered by snow, ice, and more snow.

The town of Fulton in New York has drawn attention where it has been snowing now for 9 days, accumulating 55 inches of snow so far. The cold spell has reached into 32 states, and even in Florida, temperatures have dipped into the 20s.

The following airlines have issued advisories for its passengers.

Passengers scheduled for travel from 12:00 noon, January 7, 2010, through 9:59 am, January 8, 2010, on AirTran Airways to/from Atlanta, may change their reservation without penalty as long as travel is completed within five days from the date of the original scheduled departure date, based on space availability without fees or fare adjustments.

Passengers holding reservations for travel to/from Atlanta should check http://www.airtran.com/ under “Flight Status” for updates or call 1-800-AIRTRAN (247-8726).

Customers scheduled on flights to, from, or through Continental’s Houston hub at Bush Intercontinental Airport on Thursday, January 7, 2010, are permitted a one-time date or time change to their itinerary without penalty. AirTran Airways advises passengers that a winter weather system expected to affect Chicago and Milwaukee could result in flight delays and/or cancellations. This advisory is an addition to an earlier announced advisory for passengers travelling to/from Atlanta.

Passengers scheduled for travel on January 7, 2010, through 9:59 am January 8, 2010, on AirTran Airways to/from Chicago and Milwaukee and from noon on January 7, 2010, through 9:59 am January 8, 2010, to/from Atlanta, may change their reservation without penalty as long as travel is completed within five days from the date of the original scheduled departure date, based on availability without fees or fare adjustments.

United Airlines
United Airlines is encouraging customers ticketed for travel January 7-8 to, from, or through certain midwest airports – or ticketed for travel January 7 to, from, or through certain southeast airports – to consider rebooking their itineraries, as certain change fees have been waived.

The revised ticketing policies apply to all tickets purchased January 6, 2010, or earlier, for travel January 7 to, from and through Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee on any United, United Express, or United code-share flight. Origin and destination cities must remain the same, and rescheduled travel must be completed within seven days of original travel date. Customers with canceled flights are eligible for a full refund.
